Kaunos: The Ancient City Across the River from Dalyan

Kaunos: The Ancient City Across the River from Dalyan

Look across the river from Dalyan and you will see temple-like facades carved high into the cliffs. These are the rock tombs of Kaunos, an ancient city that was once an important harbour on the border between Caria and Lycia.

The rock tombs

The most famous tombs were carved in the 4th century BC for the city's rulers and leading families. Their columns and triangular pediments imitate the front of a temple. You cannot climb up to them, but they are best admired from the river or from the Dalyan promenade, especially in the warm light of late afternoon.

The ancient city

Kaunos itself lies on the hillside behind the tombs. Highlights include a well-preserved theatre with views over the delta, Roman baths, temples and the remains of the old harbour. The sea has retreated over the centuries, which is why the harbour is now far inland among the reeds.

How to visit

The classic way is by boat: many river trips pass beneath the tombs, and boats also cross from Dalyan to the Çandır side, from where a short walk leads to the site. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and a hat, as there is little shade.

Good to know

Kaunos is an archaeological site with an entrance fee. Visit in the morning or late afternoon in summer to avoid the midday heat. If you would like to see the tombs, the river and Iztuzu Beach in one relaxed day, our Dalyan boat trip is the easiest way.
